What is the
reaction time resolution of
SuperLab Pro?
The resolution of the reaction time (RT) depends on two things: the resolution of the
timer itself, and the resolution of the "input device". The RT's resolution will
be the lesser of the two.
The timers in SuperLab Pro for Macintosh and
SuperLab Pro for Windows are accurate to 1 millisecond or better. So the question really
becomes "which input method do I want to use"?
In SuperLab Pro for Macintosh, you can obtain 4
millisecond resolution from an ADB keyboard. To obtain 1 millisecond resolution, you will
need one of the following input devices:
- A Cedrus
RB Series response
pad
- An I/O (input/output) card that you can connect your
own response box to
- An
SV-1 voice key
device
In SuperLab Pro for Windows, the resolution of the
keyboard varies from one model and manufacturer to the other, but could be in the range of
20 milliseconds and higher. To obtain 1 millisecond resolution, you will need:
- A Microsoft Serial Mouse.
- A Cedrus
RB Series response
pad
- An I/O (input/output) card that you can connect your
own response box to
- An
SV-1 voice key
device
The Microsoft Serial Mouse (or compatible) is the
most affordable input method and is a practical choice if your experiment does not require
more than two keys. Please note that, if the standard mouse that you use to pull menus and
click on buttons is already a Microsoft Serial Mouse, you will still need a second,
separate mouse for SuperLab Pro for Windows' use. This is the only way to achieve a 1
millisecond resolution.
I
was told that 55 milliseconds is the best you can do on a PC.
A distinction should be made between MS-DOS and Windows. 55
milliseconds was the best resolution achievable with MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows up
to version 3.0. But Windows 3.1 and later include timers accurate to 1 millisecond
thanks to the advent of multimedia and the need to synchronize sound and video in such
applications.
