The Stroop task has long been a popular demonstration of the automatic nature of reading. Previous studies have also shown that Stroop-like effects can be found in the auditory modality when participants are asked to judge speaker gender. For example, when participants were asked to listen to male and female voices saying the words "man" and "girl" and to classify the sexes of the voices, they took longer to correctly classify the voice when it said the word denoting the opposite sex. However, these previous studies did not investigate whether stimulus words simply related to the words "man" and "girl" might also cause interference. If words that are stereotypically related to male and female gender roles also cause interference in an auditory Stroop task, then this would suggest both that: 1) The associations that people make on the basis of gender are automatic in nature, and 2) The auditory Stroop can effectively tap into such automatic processes
