Stroop-like tasks have shown that the latency to name the print color of a word is longer when the word has a negative connotation. We replicated this effect with words. However, we failed to find such an effect in an analogous color naming paradigm which used pictures of facial affect as stimuli. This may mean that automatic processing of words occurs more efficiently than does automatic processing of facial affect.
